Gorta Loughra started this petition to EMPOWER

There are nine wind turbines, nearly 180 m high, proposed on the southern ridge of Shehy mountain, overlooking the scenic Cousane Gap. Cork County Council has previously turned down turbines of this height and has described them as "frightening and inappropriate". This development is currently in the very early planning stages and exact locations of the turbines have not been published, but they will likely be higher than the summit of Shehy. The developer EMPower intends to submit this project as a strategic infrastructure development application of more than 54 Megawatts, which means that concerned residents can only make observations to An Bord Pleanála.

Our concerns  regarding this development are:

  • Noise impact on residents
  • Visual impact on the scenic road R585 through the Cousane Gap, a gateway to Bantry and the Beara Peninsula,
  • Negative accumulative impact of wind farms in the upper Lee valley surrounding Lough Allua, Gougane Barra and the pass of Kimeneigh
  • Potential loss of precious biodiversity; impacting on birds, upland bog and tributaries to the Bandon River
  • Impact on the historical and cultural heritage through close proximity to a stunningly located mass rock, a stone row and numerous other archaeological sites

Please sign this petition to help stop this development and protect Shehy mountain
