We want to save the endangered Tamanian Devils, Masked Owls, Wedge-Tailed Eagles, Green and Gold Frogs, Echidnas, Bandicoots and other rare birds, as well as soft-release Wombats for which Marney’s Hill Reserve provides valuable habitat.

The Tasmanian Government wants to build a maximum security prison on the reserve, which will destroy habitat, along with having 24 hour floodlighting, loudspeakers  and alarms.

Eminent environmental experts have clearly stated that this reserve is the wrong place to build a prison- and there are suitable alternate sites that have low natural values. However, the Tasmanian Government refuses to even discuss these issues.

Federal Minister Ley can stop this terrible plan, using the EPBC Act, and we call upon the Minister to use those powers to protect the wildlife, valuable trees and other plants on Marney’s Hill Reserve.

Tassie has already lost 85% of its unique devils.  Less than 900 Wedge-Tailed Eagles survive, Masked Owls are down to less than 350 breeding pairs. Green and Gold Frog numbers have dropped by 20%, and have disappeared from a number of areas in the State.

There are other vulnerable species of fauna and flora on the reserve.

All the vulnerable species across Tasmania face multiple threats from land development, feral cats, disease, fires, vehicles and shootings.

The Tasmanian Government on one hand tells tourists to visit the state to “meet our wildlife”, and on the other, plans to destroy habitat that supports our wonderful wildlife.

Please send a message to Minister Ley to save our reserve and our special wildlife.
