The integrated drinking water scheme in Kovvali (Eluru district, AP) that’s serving 10 villages is dangerously polluted.  It’s filled with plastic trash regularly thrown by alcoholics, misusing the pond bunds for liquor consumption and other anti social activities. The goats and sheep herds are sheltered on the bund site and the droppings are also polluting the water, along with they consuming the same water. The buffalos are directly immersed in our drinking water. There is lack of supervision and basic preventive measures in the field. Though the issue has been raised multiple times to the concerned local and district authorities, no strict action is being taken on the culprits and is continuing for years together. 

Right to clean and safe drinking water is ensured as human right by the United Nations General Assembly in 2010.  The pollution of toxins from microplastics etc can cause harmful cancers, liver, kidney, stomach, respiratory and nervous disorders along with skin diseases. The 50 acre pond also is home to many species that attracts several water and migratory birds. The biodiversity of the water body is also in danger to the extent that the fish living inside the polluted pond too started dying.
