STOP THE PIGS ON GUNBOWER CREEK @ KOONDROOK VIC
Why this petition matters
Hello all,
We are a small regional community group that cares for our environment and all that it brings to us and also visitors to our area through EcoTourism
We are seeking your support to STOP the progress of a 5000 head, intensive rotational piggery being constructed beside a RAMSAR Internationally Protected Wetland area on the Gunbower Creek in northwest Victoria. The Gunbower Creek is an anabranch of the Murray River and extends for approximately 110 klms from near Torrumbarry Vic in the east, to Koondrook Vic in the west.
Gunbower Creek creates the largest inland island in Australia as well as forming part of the irrigation system for agriculture in northern Victoria.
This sensitive area is home to numerous endangered & vulnerable species of flora and fauna and acts as a key breeding area for fish & turtles out of the main stream of the Murray River.
The likelihood of impact on this environmentally sensitive area is very high and it could be said will have long term irreversible effects not only to the amenity of the area but also the visual aesthetic.
The Japanese Encephalitis Virus ( JEV ) is also of concern as it can be amplified by pigs and waterbirds and at this location, this is of major concern because of the number of locals & tourists that use this space for recreation throughout the year can also facilitate the movement of JEV to other locations.
Gannawarra Shire Council passed a vote in favour of the project on the 15.6.22. at 10.00am Voting 3-2 in favour of the planning permit, 2 councillors stood down from the vote with conflicts of interest.
This petition now exists to present the weight of community concern objecting to the decision by Gannawarra Shire Council now to VCAT in support of turning this approval around to save this pristine wetland for all.
Please watch this space and Thank you for your support!
