Stop the new building on Priory Court Estate in Nunhead

Southwark Council are moving quickly with plans to build new flats on two sites on Priory Court, SE15: one on the corner of Cheltenham and Stuart Roads and the other on Reynolds Road. We need to act now.

The new developments would involve:

  • the destruction of green space and the estate's only garden play area.
  • the destruction of the estate's community facilities including the Tenants and Residents Hall and 12 garages.

We are deeply concerned that this new construction will:

  • remove further green space and trees from Southwark
  • reduce the space to play for the estate's many children and cast deep shadows on the other play areas
  • block light and views for homes on the estate and in the surrounding streets, including the community-owned Ivy House Pub
  • add significantly to congestion and parking problems in the surrounding streets
  • demolish the Tenants and Residents Hall which the Council, without consultation, has removed from residents’ use
  • eliminate 12 garages used by families and local businesses.

Whilst most residents support the need for new social housing, we believe that there are better sites than these. This is not 'infilling' but the destruction of our already over-crowded estate. We demand that Southwark Council do not proceed.

Read the plans on Southwark Council's website for the proposed demolition and infill of the existing garages facing onto Reynolds Road and infill at the junction of Stuart Road and Cheltenham Road.
