The Philipstown Town Board is attempting to pass a Mandatory "Safe Storage" Law that stipulates when gun owners are required to lock up their guns by law. This exact law was struck down in the U.S. Supreme Court decision of D.C. v. Heller back in 2008. The court specifically ruled that government may not dictate how firearms must be stored within a home.
Self defense requires quick access to the kinds of firearms described in D.C. v. Heller, and the court unequivocally ruled these so-called "Safe Storage" laws only serve to impede access to a firearm in a self defense situation. Should the home owner own only a rifle, then that home owner is severely impeded in a home invasion.
Time and time again, mandatory storage laws serve only to benefit criminals by disarming law abiding gun owners. Cities which implement these "Safe Storage" laws consistently see a rise in crime rates and successful home invasions.
We urge the Philipstown Town Board to vote NO on this proposed local law.
