The issue

As a senior citizen over the age of 65, I am deeply concerned about the government's recent announcement to eliminate the rebate for private health care. This policy change threatens to significantly impact many of us who depend on a fixed income, and the burden of increased health care expenses poses a real risk to our financial stability and overall well-being.

Many older adults have limited financial resources as they no longer engage in regular employment. The removal of rebates will lead to an increase in premiums, which may force us to reconsider or even cancel our private health care coverage. Without this essential cover, we are at greater risk of delays in receiving medical care, potentially causing our health to deteriorate further.

Private health care rebates have historically provided a necessary cushion, ensuring that elder members of our society can access timely and effective health care without the looming threat of financial hardship. The accessibility of affordable healthcare is a matter of dignity and respect for those who have contributed to the community throughout their lives.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that seniors account for a growing portion of the population, and policies that fail to accommodate our needs could have widespread adverse effects.

Instead of removing the rebate, I propose the government engages in consultations with senior groups and studies alternative policies that would not compromise our health care needs. These could include assessing cost-effective measures in the public health system or maintaining a tiered rebate approach for those on lower incomes.

I urge fellow Australians to support this cause and stand with us in ensuring that government policies take into account the health and financial security of our elderly population. Please sign this petition to urge the government to reconsider their decision and implement strategies that preserve accessible health care for all.
