The Literary and Cultural Studies (LCS) major at Curtin University has been slated for discontinuance. At this point in time, the plan is for there to be no further intake of students to the major from 2014 and it is to be completely taught out by the end of 2015.
The LCS program is a vibrant and important part of Humanities at Curtin University, and its closure will have an adverse impact on the university as a whole.
LCS is not a discrete area of study; it provides a liberal arts backdrop to many other majors across the university, such as Creative and Professional Writing, Performance Studies, Journalism, Screen Arts, Public Relations and Marketing.
This closure will affect not only students who wish to complete an LCS major, but potentially also those students who take LCS units as part of a minor area of study or as electives.
This planned closure is an attack on students’ right to a critical education and an attack on the very strong Cultural Studies research culture at Curtin University.
