Dona Park is a fence-line community in the middle of Corpus Christi’s Refinery Row. Hundreds of families live in this community and they are fighting the planned demolition of the old Encycle facility, a subsidiary of ASARCO.
For years Encycle operated illegally. Permitted by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to be a recycling and reclamation facility for heavy metals, Encycle instead processed chemicals like cyanide and accepted, incinerated and stored chemical warfare agents. This facility is so toxic that for years it stood abandoned.
Now, with more heavy industry planning to build in the area, the facility is scheduled for demolition immediately despite the fact that the Dona Park community is concerned that the demolition will disturb the highly toxic chemicals in the buildings, the soil and the smoke stack, and will contaminate their community even more and jeopardize their health.
