Stop the Deliberate Littering in Dunfermline Streets

The Issue

As a local resident of Dunfermline, I am deeply concerned about the incessant littering that plagues our streets. This uncouth, totally unnecessary and avoidable behaviour is not just an eyesore but also has severe implications for our environment. It contributes to global warming, biodiversity loss (greatly reducing the population sizes of mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians), and increases plastic pollution. Please see the picture. As far as I can see, the areas most affected are from the city centre all through Pilmuir Street, Wyrtle Wynd, Woodruff Gait and most adjoining and private properties.

This problem, it is clear to see, is at its worst during school days by a minority of pupils attending Queen Anne High School, Dunfermline. Not only does this discarded rubbish mar the beauty of our town but it also poses health risks to all local residents who pay Fife council tax. N.B. The residents of Dunfermline fund all the of Queen Anne High School staff, the maintenance and upkeep of the property, thereby; ensuring that all the attending pupils have a first class education. Yet some of these pupils do not understand or appreciate this fact and repay this privilege by continued and offensive behaviour. This is clearly not acceptable.

According to Keep Britain Tidy's annual survey on littering in the UK (2019), in access of 2 million pieces of litter are dropped every day and we can imagine how grave this issue really is.

We need immediate action from Fife Council to implement stricter anti-litter laws and enforce penalties for those who continue to disrespect our community by littering. Additional bins for cardboard, food and plastics are also needed. We must protect our environment for future generations and ensure that Dunfermline remains a clean place where people want to live.

Please sign this petition if you care about preserving the beauty and health of Dunfermline's streets.
