The continued downgrading of services at St John's Hospital, Livingston, is detrimental to the health of the people of West Lothian and we should not be forced to travel to Edinburgh for healthcare treatment.
Cabinet Secretary for Health. Scottish Government Alex Neil MSP
We, the undersigned people of West Lothian and people with friends, children or relatives in the area, wish the Health Secretary, Alex Neil MSP, and The Scottish Government, to reconsider its proposed further downscaling of St John’s Hospital in Livingston, and to look again at what can be done to increase staffing levels and services at St John’s. We believe that lives are and will be put at risk by sending more patients to Edinburgh’s already struggling hospitals and reducing services at St Johns. We also believe that the down-scaling of St John’s will cause enormous upheaval and distress for the families and friends of patients who are sent to Edinburgh instead of being treated locally at St John’s. This distress will not only be emotional and physical, but also economical as the cost in time and money of going back and forth to Edinburgh is too high a price to pay in this supposed age of austerity, particularly when people can’t afford to take days off work to travel to the Capital in the first place. Furthermore, we implore the Health Secretary and the Scottish Government to consider the particular distress that is and will be caused to young children and their parents due to this current downscaling, the last thing sick children or any other patients need is to know that their families are at least 15 miles away while they are in hospital. Over 100,000 people rely on St John’s, it was one of the best hospitals in the country, we the undersigned implore the Health Secretary and the Scottish Government to think again about its proposed further downscaling of St Johns, and to consider re-instating some of the services that have already been moved away from the hospital. The people of West Lothian, and Livingston, deserve better. We didn’t vote for austerity, we shouldn’t have our lives and the lives of our children put at risk because of it.
