There will be a public hearing November 17, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. by the Jackson County Board of Supervisors to address a permit that has been requested by Gulf Pride Land Holdings, LLC to build a concrete plant near the intersection of Jim Ramsey Road and Old Fort Bayou Road. This land is currently zoned General Agricultural (A-1). The production of a concrete plant would change the zoning to Industrial (I-1). This is a primarily residential area and the effects of a concrete plant in this area will have devastating effects on human, animal, and plant life in the area.

  • Cement Dust: Exposure to the miniscule particles can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and upper respiratory system. To minimize inhalation of cement dust OSHA requires most cement worker's wear a P-, N-, or R-95 respirators.
  • Exposure to silica, one of the key components in cement, can lead to lung injuries including silicosis and lung cancer.
  • Concrete batch plants and associated equipment including mixers and cement/ash storage silos emit air contaminants including particulate matter and toxic air contaminants.
  • Sulfur Dioxide in high concentrations can affect breathing and may aggravate existing  respiratory and cardiovascular disease. Sensitive populations include asthmatics, individuals with bronchitis, emphysema, or pulmonary fibrosis, children and the elderly.
  • Almost all studies found positive associations between cement plant exposure and respiratory diseases and symptoms. an excess risk of cancer incidence and mortality in both children and adults mainly concerning respiratory tract cancers.
  • "The cement sector is the third largest industrial source of pollution, emitting more than 500,000 tons per year of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon monoxide." (source: www.epa.gov
  • Concrete trucks weigh up to 95,000 lbs. there will be an increase of eighteen wheelers hauling supplies to the plant. This presents many dangers on our narrow single lane roads.
  • There are three types of animals protected by federal law under (ESA) The Endangered Species Act in Mississippi that live within a five mile radius of the proposed location of the concrete plant.
