Stop the Closure of the Cass Instrument Makers Degree(Guildhall/LCF)

As of Friday October 23rd students of the Musical Instruments program received and email outlining that the course would "stop recruiting." This is a polite way of telling students that the course will stop running once the students that are currently enrolled have graduated.

The course has its historical footings in the East End of London and has roots back to Shoreditch in 1905. The London College of Furniture featured the Musical Instrument Making program in it's course catalog in the 1950's. The college was relocated in the 1970's to its current home on Commercial Road and included a wider range of tuition including Early Woodwind Making and Repair, Violin Making, Fretted Instruments Making and Repair, Harpsichord Making, Musical Instrument Technology, Piano (Tuning, Maintenance, and Repair,) and Stringed Keyboard Design and Manufacture.

The program has seen the Shoreditch Technical Institute become the London College of Furniture, then Guildhall University, and it's final home in The Cass Faculty of London Metropolitan University.

This cut is seen among 19 other courses cut at the Cass Faculty of London Metropolitan University. The University announced October 9, 2015 that the entire Cass Faculty would "move" to the North Campus, as well as clearing up that the Commercial Road building has been sold and that student numbers will reduce by thousands.

This historical course is the only of its kind in the world and to lose it would be a shame for the future of musical instruments and a lost opportunity for future generations.

We appeal the action to stop recruiting on the Musical Instrument BSc; that it continue recruiting, promise the same facilities and level of teaching for the coming years, and that the course be returned to the London Metropolitan University course catalogue immediately.
