The Issue
Highland Elementary is more than just a school; it is a pillar of our community and a second home for many children and families in Lincoln County. For years, it has been a place where children have grown, learned, and developed not only academically, but socially and emotionally. Our school provides a nurturing environment where kids feel safe and supported.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of Highland Elementary is the way our special needs students are embraced by their peers. In a world where bullying is rampant, our community stands out as a rare exception. Here, special needs students are not only accepted but celebrated and loved by everyone. This type of environment is hard to find and even harder to replicate at a larger school where they risk being just another face in the crowd.
Moreover, as a small school, we have built a strong bond between the staff, students, and their families. This tight-knit community has collaborated effectively for the betterment of the children. Families know that their children will be treated with care by instructors who understand their individual needs.
Sports and extracurricular activities are also at the heart of our Highland Aviators spirit. Many kids have played sports representing Highland for most of their lives, wearing their aviator colors with pride. These activities are not just hobbies; they’re pivotal in shaping the identity and teamwork skills of our kids.
Despite reassurances that jobs may not be lost, the reality often paints a different picture. With the closure of Highland Elementary, jobs will inevitably be affected, and families will face unsettling uncertainty.
We urge the Lincoln County Board of Education to reconsider this decision. Closing Highland Elementary will not only break apart a family of educators but will also disrupt the lives of students and educators who have thrived under its supportive roof.
Please sign this petition to help keep Highland Elementary open for future generations and preserve the unique environment that fosters acceptance, learning, and camaraderie. Let us stand together to save our school and protect our community’s heart.
