Stop the closure of Central Public School in Kingston, Ontario.
Central PS is a pillar of the downtown community. It provides a safe and caring environment for students and families from a wide variety of circumstances.
Maintaining an elementary school in the downtown affords families the opportunity to live in a vibrant and inclusive urban community and is in alignment with the City of Kingston’s Sustainability plan to intensify its downtown. Local businesses rely on the school to attract people to live, shop, and work downtown.
Central Public School is a role model school that attracts students both from its own catchment area and from outside its catchment area.
The school has a significant number of partnerships that would cease, including:
Old MacDonald’s Daycare, housed inside the building, that has been providing daycare services to the people who work and live downtown for over 25 years.
The APPLE program, in partnership with Hotel Dieu, that provides care for students with a significant learning disability and mental health disorder.
Queen’s University and St. Lawrence College programs such as Commerce Kids, Kaleidoscope, Queen’s Health Outreach, Engineers Without Borders, and a variety of post-secondary placements (Bachelor of Psychology, Bachelor of Education, Behavioural Science Technology, Child and Youth Worker) that bring around 100 post-secondary volunteers into the school each week.
Central Public School Community Garden, maintained through the generous support of local residents, hosts community fundraisers and social events that benefit organizations like “Grow a Row”.
An extraordinary amount of parent and community volunteers who give their time and energy to the school.
The PARC mandate is to explore options that have the greatest economic savings with the least community impact. The closing of Central would result in a one time savings of $3.8 million to the LDSB and move its student population into a Frontenac Public School that would cost over $8 million for the School Board to bring up to standard.
