Why this petition matters

Started by Cynthia Hegler

When the Reid High School was built a sewer line was installed to carry waste from the school to the City sewage plant.

The Reid High School was demolished in the mid 60’s by The City of Belmont to ensure that white children would not have to attend a black school.

When the school was torn down - the City did not abandon the old sewer line that now sits under 7 properties in the Reid Community.

The City is still refusing to abandon the line after over a year request and update the infrastructure. They are also refusing to allow houses to be built or rebuilt along the line - effectively stealing land and property value from the community.

For example - if a house along the line burns down, it cannot be rebuilt and the lot effectively has no value since it is unbuildable.  The City suggested solution is that owners forego the value of their land and donate the land to the City rather than them abandoning the line and fixing the issue.

Sign the petition to demand the City abandon the line and stop stealing private property and diminishing property values.
