A witch hunt has began against legal chronic pain in our country.
After a brutal ATV accident 15 years ago, my fiancee was left with a nerve severed arm, rods, pins, screws, a broken neck and hip, and a hand that will never work again. He suffered every day since. Thanks to pain management, he went from being an invalid, to a productive member of society. After a law passed in Maryland, his insurance company has condemned him and refused to fill his prescriptions. Pharmacies refuse to carry his medicine or fill them. Every month is a struggle, and we constantly wait and worry that he will be the next to fall through the cracks.
In a Massachusetts review of overdoses, just 8 percent of those who had overdosed had received opioid prescriptions in the prior month. Despite that evidence, we're doing NOTHING as a society to stop the deadly heroin and illicit fentanyl from being on our streets, and doing EVERYTHING TO CONDEMN WHAT IS NOT THE PROBLEM.
"90 percent of all addictions—no matter what the drug—start in the adolescent and young adult years, not in pain management. Typically, young people who misuse prescription opioids are heavy users of alcohol and other drugs. This type of drug use, not medical treatment with opioids, is by far the greatest risk factor for opioid addiction,'' according to a study by Richard Miech of the University of Michigan and his colleagues.
Insurance companies have been allowed to decide the fate of patients, not doctors. People who have followed the rules for years are being hunted because they're the easy target. Despite debilitating pain, pills counts, drug testing, and regulation, pain patients are being condemned and falling through the cracks.
As one doctor recently said "the pendulum has swung too far to the right."
Today, chronic pain patients don't just fight to walk, or get out of bed. They fight for their right to CONTINUE THEIR LIVES! Legitimate pain management patients ARE FACING MORE AND MORE HURDLES. As these patients lose their legal medications, MORE WILL TURN TO ILLICIT DRUGS, meaning MORE overdoses, not less. Meaning MORE criminals, more broken lives and more struggle. WE ARE COUNTERACTING THE PROBLEM!!!!
Please help me stand for every veteran in pain. For every cancer patient. For every person that wakes in tears, and cannot take a step without agony. Please stand for every long-term responsible pain management patient who HAS THE RIGHT TO NOT LIVE IN PAIN. IF TYLENOL STOPPED CHRONIC PAIN NO ONE WOULD BE IN PAIN MANAGEMENT. BECAUSE OUR GOVERNMENT DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO STOP THE ILLICIT DRUGS, THEY ARE CONTROLLING AND HARMING LAW ABIDING CITIZENS.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have already passed bills that make it hard to fill prescriptions. Now they want to pass a bill that would let a PHARMACIST, not a doctor, DENY opiate prescriptions to pain management patients. Despite being on the same medication for years, patients would be denied, and no doctor could help them. WE MUST STAND UP FOR OUR RIGHTS and stop letting insurance companies CONDEMN LEGAL PATIENTS. We are asking the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to begin reversing the damaging effects to pain management and conduct more research. Stop the bill that would ALLOW PHARMACISTS TO DENY LEGAL PRESCRIPTIONS AND BEGIN REVERSING THE DAMAGING LAWS THAT MAKE IT HARD TO FILL LEGAL PRESCRIPTIONS.
