Midland Concerned Citizens started this petition to Midland Town Council and Staff

TO:  Taxpayers in the Town of Midland; if you are a homeowner or business owner, please sign this petition!

Dear Midland Council,

We, the following residents, respectfully ask that you reconsider your 2021 budget and direct staff to implement savings that will keep Midland at a zero percent blended tax increase.  This is estimated to be the equivalent of less than $1 Million reduction in capital or operational spending, and we believe that you can find those savings without impacting core services during a global pandemic.

Three Councillors voted NO for any budget increase; Councillor Bill Gordon, Carole McGinn and Beth Prost.  They need to be commended for their persistence in working on behalf of their constituents.

Six remaining Councillors and Staff let us all down.

In a recent Facebook post, over 250+ comments have struck a negative accord within the community.

The 3-Day 2021 Budget deliberations show that Councillors Bill Gordon, Carole McGinn and Beth Prost asked many questions and offered many suggestions with intent to get to a ZERO % (0%) increase.   Just a reminder, our water and wastewater went up 5% & 4% respectively.

Budget increases will not affect some senior management, as they do not reside in Midland.

Council and The Town needed to cut a few items to get to zero blended and the elimination of the following items could possibly get us to a ZERO % increase:

  • -       Council gave over $600k to Midland Bay Landing.
  • -       Council also questioned the need in hiring a Manager of Legal & Risk Services, (Law Clerk or Junior Lawyer) making $140k.  This is a newly created, senior staffing position and was at the request of the Town Solicitor who has been in her position for less than four (4) months and resides in North Bay.  With respect to the new hire, and more specifically, this person would come with a Real Estate background to assist the Town Solicitor.

In our observation, it appears that Midland has been overspending for many years and this budget is a continuance.

Local area 2021 tax comparison with population:

        Town           Population       % Increase
Barrie                    141,600                0.92 %

Mayor Stewart Strathearn and Deputy Mayor Mike Ross both stated:

“Midland is the highest taxed in the County and the lowest income per household.”
