Javier Davila, a Student Equity Program Advisor at the TDSB (Toronto District School Board) was reinstated without discipline to his position after being under investigation for two emails sent to teachers. These emails were filled with messages defending terrorism and the brutal murder of Israeli citizens. In the emails, terrorists are referred to as "freedom fighters," and peace-seeking Zionists are described as evil monsters seeking to "annihilate the Palestinian people as a whole." Not only are these messages filled with a breathtaking amount of ignorance, but they are stuffed to the brim with astonishingly vile anti-Jewish racism as well. Of course, none of this matters to the TDSB, as anti-Jewish racism apparently isn't significant. As politics continue to shift to extremes on both sides of the spectrum, my fellow students and I shouldn't have to feel unsafe in the TDSB merely because of our ethnicity. If Javier Davila is fired, it will show people that the TDSB is willing to support Jews in the ongoing fight against anti-Jewish racism. Anything less than this will clearly expose a lack of commitment within the TDSB to ensure that all students, even the Jewish ones, feel safe.
