My Dad has done the right thing and saved for his retirement. Latterly he has developed Alzheimers disease and eventually required constant specialist help. Last christmas it came to a head and my Dad entered permanent care. My Dad is paying full care fees which obviously has saved the local authority a large sum. I was absolutely astonished to discover that HMRC make no allowance for my Dads circumstances and continue to tax his pension income as if he was living a normal life., despite the fact that his income is a fraction of the care fee. Now I know that my Dad uses public services but only healthcare now. I do not think that a person who has saved all of his life should continue to be subject to income tax if they are unfortunate enough to end up in nursing care. Alzheimers is a devastating disease and families cannot cope with it. The Government and HMRC are rubbing salt in the wound.
