Stop Stagecoach from reducing the 26 bus service from South Cambs into Cambridge

The no. 26 bus service links a number of villages to the South of Cambridge to the city. The route passes through Harston, Foxton, Shepreth, Melbourn and Royston. It currently runs hourly however from January 2017 Stagecoach have decided to make it run once every 2 hours during off peak hours. This is because the route does not run a significant profit, a primary result of the bus being used by elderly people with a bus pass on subsidised rates. The off peak period covers the majority of the buses running time and the peak time service described only involves one extra bus going into Cambridge in the morning and one extra bus coming back. Prior to service changes there was a hope that the service would be increased rather than decreased.
The result of making the bus less regular will make it much harder for many villagers, including those unable to drive or unable to afford a car, to travel into the city. It will also lead to an increased numbers of cars being used on this route and therefore contribute to increased traffic on the A10 and in the Cambridge city centre.
South Cambs MP Heidi Allen is already supporting us to stop the erosion of this vital bus service, which inevitably may lead to the service stopping completely in future. We need to ensure Stagecoach realise how important it is that this route maintains an at least one hourly service.
