Stop Source Of Income Discrimination By Landlords, Realtors and Property Managers
Why this petition matters
Single parent, and Low income families all have to suffer at the hands of, Landlords who now hide behind realtors and property managers to strategically discriminate against, those on a Fixed income as well as HUD voucher holders, even in cities and counties where SOI discrimination laws are already in place.
For example, a single mother who travels nearly 2 hrs in traffic working full-time making 15 per hour in an area of opportunities, who would meet most requirements, good credit, good rental history, no criminal record or evictions, applies for a single family home in a safe suburban area with good schools, and SOI discrimination is Illegal and the rent being within a fair market affordable range at 1565 and everything looks good until she submits her voucher and the conditions and standards now change "The owner is looking for longevity" "The owner wants a two year lease" (when the listing said 12 month lease) "The owner has other applicants and is looking for the one with the highest income" "The owner is taking bids only the highest bidder" "HUD will not pay the now listed amount" (the rent now jumps from 1565 to nearly out of the payment standard at 1765 in which HUD will pay in that area. The single mom only has a set time to find a home or she loses her voucher, while the area she currently lives in has a handful of section 8/HCV HUD voucher accepted homes available only it is simply unsafe, with a high crime rate a low employment rate and very few jobs. While some might say "Not in my neighborhood" or "She should've made better choices" or "She should get a job" when she already has one. She is doing the best she can do for her 3 children and just wants to raise them in a safe child/family friendly neighborhood with good opportunities. This is her human and Civil Right to live in an area she chooses and not be discriminated against because a portion of her rent would be covered via government program. This is a subtle strategic form of source of income discrimination.
Another Example a working widowed single father of two holds a degree, but can only work part-time due to one of his children being special needs in which requires his attention. The single widowed father who receives survivor benefits for his two children of 1400 per month in supplement to his earned income, the owner refuses a home that suits his family's needs because part of his income was via the government. This is another form of soi income discrimination.
This has to change, Landlords, Realtors and Property Managers need to be held legally accountable, for denying vulnerable populations, the right to live in a safe, area of opportunities to better stability. This denial of a basic civil and human right has caused, a great deal of hardship, has left many to stay in unsafe neighborhoods as well as areas lacking in opportunity and now with inflation added the number of homeless is growing, these are people with children! No child, hardworking parent or anyone deserves to live on the street due to a bias. They are getting away with destroying peoples livelihood and need to face repercussions. Any Landlord,Realtor, Property management who aides in this form of discrimination should not only "risk" losing their license but face a jail time for the amount of damage they've caused.
