Stop single use baby food packaging

Stop single use baby food packaging
Why this petition matters

The children we feed today with single use food packaging will be suffering the consequences in the years, and generations to come. Most plastics will take on average 500 years to decompose. That is 10 GENERATIONS. If we carry on ignoring this issue, what are we leaving our loved ones to come? Our children’s, children’s, children? A place where all resources are gone, the climate is unliveable, the world is harsh and ugly, where nature is barren and full of waste and rubbish? What future do you want your future families to live with?
We are living in a ever-growing world that is becoming increasingly conscious of the damage our consumer market is having on our environment. This is being seen through global warming, natural disasters and deforestation amongst other consequences. Amidst all this, we still tolerate companies producing single use plastics. There are many guilty brands such as ‘Deliciously Ella’ posing innocent colourful, friendly, parental marketing. This packaging can only be recycled at sites sometimes hours away from where they are sold. What parent has time to do this? And the carbon off set through petrol to do this is just as criminal as the product itself. These products are made completely irresponsibly in regards to the environment and our planet. They will almost all entirely end up in land fill.
Why is this so bad? Well, one of the biggest environmental threats posed by landfills is exactly that - greenhouse gases. And in particular, when organic material like food scraps in this packaging is put in a landfill, it is compacted down and covered, removing the oxygen. This causes the material to break down in an anaerobic process which releases methane. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is approximately 86 TIMES MORE POTENT than carbon dioxide! This makes it a major environmental threat to our climate. It is also a flammable gas that can become dangerous if it is able to build up in a concentrated area.
Can you believe- the methane emissions from landfills in 2019 were about the same as greenhouse gas emissions from more than 21.6 million passenger vehicles driven for 1 year. If nothing changes, landfill sites will account for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.
For the sake of our children, future generations and the very planet we live on… DO NOT BUY SINGLE USE BABY FOOS PRODUCTS! It is not sustainable! Make your own easily! A handful of vegetables or fruit items mashed with a fork are identical to that which come in single use baby food containers. We also put more intentional love and connection into the food we make, and this will have countless benefits for us and the children we feed it to. There are endless resources available online and in libraries on how to make home made baby food. There is NO EXCUSE not to.
The future of our planet, the people and animals on it, nature in all its beauty, hangs in a fine balance of the decisions we as consumers make now. Make the right decision. Make a conscious decision.
