Stop Sexual Harassment in Schools

Stop Sexual Harassment in Schools
Sexual assault is a real issue in schools that people know about but no one has seemed to do anything about it. According to RAINN, Campus Sexual Violence Statistics over 50% of students in high school and college report experiencing sexual assault of harassment, and 81% of students report assault or harassment happening to someone they know. People have very traumatic experiences with negative emotional responses, people being diagnosed with PTSD, depression and heightened anxiety realating to their sexaul assault. This has continued to be a problem despite people coming forth and demanding change. People who have come forth about their experiences and asked school administrators to be distanced from their past abuser, that firstly nothing was done and also when they went to others for help, the same administrators told them to not tell people about it because it would just make it more “messy” for everyone involved. Not only are victims not being listened to but they are also being actively silenced as well. This issue is greatly affecting students and something needs to be done about it. We need more accountable administration and a safe environment in schools. Although it is hard to know what to do about these types of situations, in school we need to unlearn rape culture that we are taught by society. People also need to be taken seriously when they come forth and their abusers need to be dealt with, by suspending or expelling them, more than just talking to or being told not to do it again, it needs to be enforced.
