There is a very important, time-sensitive, zoning issue that needs our attention. You may have noticed a rezoning hearing sign on the West side of Hwy. 225 across from Bromley Road. A proposal is going before the County Commission requesting the 2.72-acre property be rezoned from Rural Single-Family Estate, to Rural/Retail, ALLOWING FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A DOLLAR GENERAL STORE.

At a recent County Planning and Zoning meeting, Committee staff recommended for approval of the zone change. Luckily, several local community residents asked for a denial of the change, and in a 6-to-2 vote, the Committee supported leaving the property zoned Rural Single-Family Estate. 

However, family heirs who now own the property, and the attorney representing them, indicate they will continue to push for a rezone to Rural/Retail at an upcoming Oct. 15 County Commission meeting to be held in Council Chambers in Bay Minette at 8:30 am.

There are numerous convenience stores within five miles either direction of the proposed Dollar General. Negative impacts of rezoning to Rural/Retail include: creeping commercialism along the Hwy. 225 Scenic By-Way; lower property values associated with the spread of small retail establishments; additional dangerous traffic flow around blind corners and hills on Hwy, 225; and erosion of the solemn historical nature of the State Veterans Cemetery, Saluda Ridge Cemetery, and Blakeley State Park, not to mention disruption of the quietude of our neighborhoods.

Please consider signing this petition, emailing the Baldwin County Commission, calling and voicing your concerns to the Baldwin County Commission, and/or attending the County Commission meetings.
