COVID-19 is real, it’s a menace; let’s think of our safety and let the authorities guarantee us the same during these exciting games.

COVID-19 is not gone, not yet, it’s here with us; lets not use such excuses to put our guard down.

A recent report by Alabama Political Reporter stated that it was unclear whether COVID mitigation measures will be in place when thousands travel from across the globe to Birmingham for the World Games in July.

During the July 2022 World Games in Birmingham, safety is paramount. No one is safe. COVID-19 remains the greatest global threat and the great State of Alabama is no exemption. Birmingham city authorities and TWG officials should not relax their guard, as we are not yet out of the woods. We demand improved COVID-19 Mitigation Measures and screening for all visitors who will be coming from more than 100 countries.

To help keep the community safe, additional measures need to be put in place to strengthen the current COVID-19 measures already in place to mitigate any risk of the virus spreading. Without change to current rules and protocols, cases could rise during these games which will no doubt attract huge crowds.

Alabama authorities should require everyone coming/taking part in these games to have a recent negative COVID-19 test, irrespective of the entry requirements of the country/state a person is coming from.

With more than 10,000 participants from over 100 countries expected to come to Birmingham for the World Games, this petition stands for a stronger and safe Alabama during and after the games to evade the agony of a lockdown scenario. We have witnessed many schools’ closings by states' governments such as Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, and Wisconsin. Many other cities and individual schools have made similar decisions due to the threat posed by COVID-19.

Implementing COVID-19 protocols during the two weeks when the games will be ongoing is a must. Authorities, this is not a favor for the great people of Alabama rather than reasonable demands. Our lives after The World Games 2022 matters, which is why we petition for the highest implementation of COVID-19 protocols. We all stand in solidarity.

In conclusion, we don't want to risk another COVID-19 variant visiting the great state of Alabama, and potentially spreading to the rest of the U.S. disguised in the "Trojan Horse" of The World Games 2022.  Hospitals bursting their capacity, reintroducing lockdowns and threatening our vulnerable population would be a tragedy. This would undoubtedly tarnish this otherwise proud event and be an embarrassment to the rest of this great country.
