Stop Penncrest School Board from Ignoring Students in Furlough Decisions

The Issue

To: Penncrest School District Board Members and Administration

HAYFIELD TOWNSHIP — In an attempt to balance the 2024-25 Penncrest School District budget, the Finance Committee has proposed drastic cuts that could severely impact our students and community. We, the concerned citizens, parents, teachers, and students of the Penncrest School District, urge the board to reconsider these harmful measures.

Proposed Cuts and Their Impacts:

  • Staff Reductions: The district could lose 29 staff members next year, including seven high school teachers, three librarians, four elementary teachers, and multiple support staff. These cuts would result in larger class sizes, reduced individual attention for students, and fewer resources to support educational programs.
  • Extracurricular and Athletic Programs: Proposals include eliminating assistant coaching positions, combining athletic programs, and cutting postseason travel expenses. These changes would undermine the development of teamwork, leadership, and school spirit, and could make teams ineligible for postseason play.
  • Increasing Costs for Students: Charging students $2 to $4 for tickets to athletic events would place an additional financial burden on families and limit student participation in school activities.
  • Other Potential Cuts: The consideration of half-day kindergarten, a four-day school week, and changes in health care providers would disrupt the education and well-being of our youngest learners and staff members.

Financial Realities: The proposed cuts, totaling $2.9 million, still leave a deficit of approximately $502,000. While the board has decided against a property tax increase, we believe that preserving the quality of education should be a priority. A modest 2-mill tax increase could eliminate this shortfall and prevent these devastating cuts.

Community Impact: These reductions threaten the future of our district. As board member Tim Brown highlighted, drastic measures such as these would have far-reaching repercussions across the community. Our students deserve a well-rounded education that includes access to comprehensive academic programs, extracurricular activities, and adequate support services.

We understand the need to address budget deficits, but not at the expense of our children's education and the district's integrity. We call on the board to explore alternative solutions that do not compromise the quality of education or the well-being of our students and staff.
