Why this petition matters

Water Scarcity is an issue that is only going to grow more dire in the future. Currently, 2.2 billion people do not have access to clean water and this number is expected to increase to 2.6 billion by 2030. Every year five million people die due to diseases contracted through the use of contaminated water. However, there are companies who are making a profit on this need for water, notably Nestle. Nestle is known for "water grabbing", or preying on struggling communities to gain control of their water. In 2018 they reported a profit of over 7.8 billion dollars in water alone. I believe nobody should be profiting billions of dollars on water when there are countries where people don't even have access to clean water to wash their hands, or drink. Nestle has a plant here in Mescota County, Michigan, where they bottle 1200 bottles of water per minute. I believe starting at the local level, we should stop their control over water when it is a resource so desperately needed by many.
