Stop Outsourcing at Knox County Schools!
This petition had 280 supporters
On March 27, 2011, Knox County School Superintendent Jim McIntyre publicly released his proposed 2011-2012 budget. His proposal included laying off hundreds of workers and privatizing custodial work. We know that privatizing is a bad idea by logic and from experience. Knox County Schools has gone this route before, with such a marked decline in the quality of services that we could not renew the contract. Additionally, any savings resulting from outsourcing come directly from cutting wages and benefits. (Knox County custodians currently make between $8 and $11 an hour; a private company will pay less and provide no benefits.) We appreciate administrators' work to solve our budget problems; but contracting out these essential services can only hurt the school staff teams, our workers, and Knox County students. It's not fair. It's not effective. Therefore, we ask the Knox County School Board not to outsource our custodial staff!
