Please end organ transplant discrimination in Maine
This petition had 594 supporters
Patients are routinely denied a place on the national organ transplant waiting list or dropped from the list when they test positive for cannabis use – even legal, doctor-recommended medical cannabis. This policy penalizes medical cannabis patients, despite scientific research showing cannabis organ transplant users have the same survival rates as non-users.
LD 764 will stop hospitals from denying organ transplants for people prescribed medical marijuana by their doctors. Please support LD 764.
By approving LD 764, medical use of marijuana may no longer be the SOLE disqualifying factor for a person in need of an organ transplant.
LD 764 does not tie doctors’ hands or interfere in the practice of medicine. Doctors are still free to make a clinical decision about the suitability of an individual candidate for an organ transplant.
LD764 respects the doctor-patient relationship by allowing a patient to use legal, doctor recommended medicine, while ensuring equal access to life-saving doctor recommended therapy.
7 other states already protecting legal medical cannabis patients from discrimination in the organ transplants process: AZ, CA, DE, IL, MN, NH, RI. Maine should join these states in ending discrimination against legal medical marijuana patients.
