Why this petition matters

Started by Phyllis Coachman

On December 9, 2021, New York City's Council approved a bill to allow approximately 800,000 foreign nationals with visas, work permits, and green cards to vote in local citywide elections that have resided in NYC consecutively for 30 days.

The Council Member who  sponsored Bill 1867-A referred to as the "Foreign Citizen Voting Bill," introduced the Bill with the intent to " increase the power of Hispanics and Asians." An estimated 488,030 Hispanics and 343,018 Asians will be eligible to vote in 2023 due to the passing of this intentional violation of the 15th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Voting rights are guaranteed by the U.S Constitution and are exclusively for citizens of the United States. Black Americans, specifically Freedmen, fought, bled, and some died for the right to vote.

The racial implications of this voting policy will blatantly and negatively impact Black Americans by weakening our voting strength. Diluting the Black votes and increasing the Hispanic and Asian votes can shift the voting power away from Black Americans. "Foreign citizen voters could potentially make up 15% or more of the electorate in future New York City elections. "The  additional 800,000 or more noncitizens eligible to vote in NYC is greater than the margin of victory in many municipal elections."

The lawsuit was filed against the Board of Elections by four Black American Plaintiffs through the Public Interest Legal Foundation. The attorney filed the civil rights lawsuit in the Supreme Court of New York County of Richmond on February 2, 2022.

We are respectfully requesting a declaration that the Foreign Citizen Voting Bill was adopted with racial intent and violated the guaranteed Fifteenth Amendment. We are also requesting a permanent injunction prohibiting the defendant from registering or counting votes cast by what is referred to in the Bill as foreign citizens.

Let's not allow this to be the new norm in America! Please sign and boost the petition to stop this dangerous dilution of the American citizens' votes and protect our 15th Amendment Rights!
