Why this petition matters

Started by Cindi Courbat-Cox

Now is the time to talk about free speech and civil rights in AMERICA

In 2020, the state of Tennessee made it a felony to camp anywhere on state owned land. This year, Tennessee has become the first state in the nation to also make it a felony to camp on local public property such as parks. The new law takes effect on July 1. The felony charge is punishable by up to six years in prison and the loss of voting rights.

These laws not only make it hard for the houseless to survive – they also hinder free speech by violating our First Amendment rights to free speech and to peaceful assembly. Our petition is to help overturn these laws.

Get more information about the Tennessee laws and related issues that have prompted our concerns. Read recent media reports and stories related to these new no camping laws and the impact these laws have on the homeless and those struggling to find affordable housing.

Is this important "no camping" issue relevant only to campers in Tennessee? No. Several other states have introduced similar bills, but Tennessee is the only one to make camping a felony. Meanwhile, our nation's First Amendment guarantees all citizens the right to free speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, freedom to petition and freedom to peacefully assemble. Listen to the nightly news and you will find countless cases of these basic civil rights being stripped away.

Please get on board with our first online petition addressing no camping laws in Tennessee. If you want these laws overturned, please set up a tent in your own front yard and sign our petition today right here online or join our assembly in Nashville and sign our petition in person. What else can you expect when we caravan into Nashville on June 20, 2022, to present our petition to overturn state "no camping" laws?
