Why this petition matters

Started by Blaine Anderson

Nine years ago the La Grange, KY city council enacted a 1% tax on employees to pay off the bond debt on Oldham Reserve. The mayor at that time, Bill Lammlein, proclaimed that the tax would be eliminated once this debt was paid off.

At the December 5th meeting of City Council, current city councilor Lammlein with the support of Mayor Black and other city council members is proposing to make this tax permanent. The tax will no longer “sunset”. They want to allow the tax to be used for basically whatever they deem as necessary. With the bond soon to be paid off, we do not need this tax to be extended.

An example of another tax that collects far more than anticipated or is necessary to cover expenses:  La Grange currently has a 5% liquor tax that is projected to generate $500k for oversight and enforcement of liquor laws but is being used to cover expenses outside of the scope of what this tax is supposed to cover.

Sign this petition and let the city council know that you oppose extending this tax.  The tax will also be extended to employees of nonprofit organizations. With inflation impacting purchasing power, now is not the time to extend a tax on the backs of employees.  Show up at city hall on December 5th at 6:30 and let the council know you do not support this tax.
