Why this petition matters

Started by Ishmael Tarouba

The Queen's Park Savannah in Trinidad and Tobago's capital city, Port of Spain is surrounded by the Port of Spain General Hospital, multiple doctor offices, elderly and children homes, businesses, residential communities and the Emperor Valley Zoo. The Zoo already spoke about the loud noise levels and it's close proximity to the Independence night fireworks. This event in the past has affected not only the animals in the zoo but animals and their families that reside across Port of Spain and environs. There are numerous stories. Within a short time of fireworks starting smaller birds begin intense fluttering and die within minutes and several other animals are visibly traumatized. Dogs go insane with the loud echoing noises. Citizens have to work to stabilize affected animals. In 2019 the Emperor Vally Zoo announced on a social media Facebook page that one of its male kangaroos sadly passed away from the shock and trauma experienced due to the Independence Day fireworks. We citizens must take a stand! For years there have been public calls for a complete ban on fireworks in Trinidad and Tobago. If this must continue the Independence Day fireworks celebration must be moved away from the business and social hub that is the Queen's Park Savannah to the many more suitable venues. In 2022 soundless fireworks that only illuminate the sky exists and would be an improvement to the current planned celebrations. Our animals and the families they are part of cannot continue in this way Trinidad and Tobago.
