Call for a moratorium on all mining activities in Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations territories in Clayoquot Sound.

The Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations were angered to learn that plans to begin gold mining exploration in the Tranquil Valley Tribal Park in Clayoquot Sound took a significant step forward last week. A letter was sent to the BC Minister of Energy and Mines from a Senior Mines Inspector recommending approval of a permit for Imperial Metals to conduct exploratory drilling at the long-abandoned Fandora mine site.

On behalf of Tla-o-quiaht First Nations, Clayoquot Action has been asked to post this petition calling for a moratorium on all mining activities in their traditional territories. Please share this petition widely and support the Tla-o-quiaht vision for vibrant watersheds and healthy communities. Tla-o-quiaht First Nations territories are in the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Letter to
Premier of British Columbia Christy Clark
Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett
MLA Alberni-Qualicum Scott Fraser
Tla-o-qui-aht seeks to implement sustainable livelihoods, restoration of fish stocks, and also maintain the spiritual integrity of the Tofino/Tranquil watersheds. Ecotourism, green energy, hatcheries, and vibrant, healthy fish stocks and forests are also management objectives of the Land Use Plan.
I support the Tla-o-qui-aht Land Use Planning objectives of not having mining as a permissible use in the Tofino/Tranquil watersheds. I also support Tla-o-qui-aht's objective of having a moratorium on all mining activities in the Haahuulthii of the Tla-o-qui-aht Hawiih (in the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht Chiefs).
