The Issue

South Africa is drowning in blood and silence. Every day, women and children are raped, beaten, and murdered — and still, the government hides behind legal wording.

The National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) admitted they received a petition to declare Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) a national disaster. Their response?

That it “does not meet the legal definition of a disaster.”

We call that what it is: a legal excuse to avoid moral action.

Fine. If the law says you can’t call it a disaster, then call it what it truly is — a National Crisis.

Because when women are being killed daily, that is a disaster — no legal dictionary can deny it.

We, the people of South Africa, demand:

1. Immediate recognition of GBVF as a National Crisis under the Presidency.

2. A National GBVF Response Task Team to coordinate urgent interventions across police, justice, and social services.

3. Emergency shelters, counselling centres, and survivor protection in every province.

4. Specialized GBVF courts to ensure swift, survivor-centred justice.

5. Transparent funding dedicated to combating GBVF as the emergency it is.

You can’t hide behind the Disaster Management Act forever.

We are living in disaster conditions — and we’re not asking for permission to call it what it is.

Until our safety is treated as an emergency, South Africa remains in crisis.
