Why this petition matters
Two days after my mom, also referred to as NONA, was rushed to Edward Hospital in Naperville IL, her Health Power of Attorney (her daughter and my sister) changed her PATIENT’S VISITOR STATUS WITHOUT HER KNOWLEDGE AND APPROVAL. This change RESTRICTED mom’s biological child (me), my husband and my three children, her grandchildren, whom she had a loving relationship on a daily basis with, from calling or visiting her at the hospital.
A private patient visitor status means no one can get any information on a patient regardless of who they are. The patient basically does not exist to anyone outside of the hospital's walls, including family. This can be useful if the patient is a criminal or a celebrity for obvious reasons but very devastating to the patient who is unaware that a block has been put on. There was NO health or medical reason present to allow the POA to request private status and no valid reason for the hospital to grant such a request! This was an unchecked abuse of power by the POA. The hospital could have, and should have, been more responsible before allowing this to occur and a proper and thorough investigation should have been done to prevent abuse.
This status change was not intended for mom’s well-being, instead it was an EVIL SELFISH ACT by mom’s Health POA used to retaliate against mom refusing to move into the nursing home her Health POA had chosen for her - I supported mom remaining in the home she loved. Mom’s Health POA, her daughter, retaliated by NOT SHARING mom’s hospital room number with me or my immediate family, preventing us to comfort mom during her time of need in a small hospital room. THIS HURT MOM MENTALLY and PHYSICALLY. This was explained to Edward Hospital many times but they chose not to do anything about it!
NOTHING THAT WAS PRESENTED TO EDWARD HOSPITAL JUSTIFIED A PATIENT AND HER DAUGHTER, WHOM HAD A BEAUTIFUL AND LOVING RELATIONSHIP, FROM TALKING OR BEING TOGETHER WHILE HOSPITALIZED. NOTHING!!!
Edward Hospital should have made mom aware and fully explain the change to her visitor status IN THE PRESENCE OF HER HEALTH POA. If they would have, they would have seen AN ALERT AND COHERENT beautiful lady who would NOT have wanted such a horrible change preventing contact with her child and her grandchildren! Family was so very important to my mom and my sister knew that! Mom would have explained this to Edward hospital if they would have asked!
Sadly, MOM DIED days after being released and missed out on so many of my immediate families' conversations and visits because of this restriction.

I am demanding Edward Hospital Board of Directors, make changes immediately to their PRIVATE and CONFIDENTIAL visitor status policy. If such a change has been put in place by a Health POA, and affects a biological child, parent or a loved one from having contact with the patient, make the patient aware of this IN THE PRESENCE OF THEIR HEALTH POA! If a patient’s biological child, parent or a loved one, as a grandchild, is notifying you and making you aware that your patient’s Health POA is abusing their power, INVESTIGATE the situation immediately!!!
