Stop Gambling on Hunger

Stop Gambling on Hunger

The Issue

How fat cat speculators inflated the market and drove food prices up around the world.

Remember when gas was over $4 a gallon? Remember the global food crisis that resulted in dozens of food riots around the world and plunged over 100 million people around the world into hunger?

These crises where not caused by shortages of oil or food. Instead they were caused by massive bets made on Wall Street. A large portion of the higher prices were brought on by the same thing that caused the global economic crisis - market deregulation. While we had to pay more for our gas and food, fat cat investors made a bundle. Luckily, we already know how we can avoid future gas and food bubbles. The answer is proven and cheap - all we need to do is say yes to it.

Watch this video and explore the rest of the site to learn more about how speculators brought about last year's food and oil bubbles. Most importantly, write to your members of Congress telling them to take action to avoid future bubbles. They need to know that this is important to you. Right now, they are only hearing from Wall Street.

Clearly, this seven minute video is a simplification of a complex issue, but it sums up the history behind and key problems brought on by the deregulation of commodity futures markets.

CherokeeGirl for ChangePetition StarterI didn't pay attention to politics except from a dissenting viewpoint during the Reagan / Bush 41 years. I prospered during the Clinton era, so I knew he must have been doing something right. I've always been a registered democrat, but just not engaged or empowered to affect any real change. January of 2008 when I first saw Barack Obama speak he awoke my inner activist. I'm very excited about this new era we are living. We have a lot of work ahead, but it's a relief to know we are heading in the right (left) direction. I now live and breathe politics and world affairs, and feel like I can make a difference in the world. I realize now that citizens must be active in their government. :)
