Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1955) – It ill becomes us to invoke in our daily prayers the blessings of God, the Compassionate, if we in turn will not practice elementary compassion towards our fellow creatures.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

I agree Sunney, treating animals like this is madness and can be stopped. The people must be educated to understand that this will only worsen their situation- cruelty never has a positive outcome, it makes people sick and twisted and leads to more evil in the world. These animals have no say and no voice- a sacrifice means giving up something but humans are not prepared to give their own lives as sacrifices are they? Because they are selfish and bullies: it is far easier to force the weaker to suffer, those who are defenceless and have no voice. If you wish to make a sacrifice it must be a self sacrifice, then it has meaning. The greatest sacrifice here could be the people NOT having the festival- denying themselves the sickening spectacle and sparing the innocent beings who know nothing of religion but merely wish to live peacefully and had no choice in being born another species. I hang my head in shame to be part of the human race when I think of this 'festival'- it is hell on earth and shows human greed, cruelty and evil at its most revolting and sickening.
