Stop Flooding in Lagos!

During the 2nd -9th July 2017, Lagos witnessed unprecedented severe flooding as a result of prolonged, intense rainfall across Lagos which led to high levels of flooding through out lekki, Victoria Island and Ikoyi. This caused huge traffic snarls, damages to vehicles ,flooded homes destroying properties with a lasting effect on the economic values of properties in lekki particularly VGC and most painfully loss of lives.

Lagos is situated in a flood plain, bounded by Atlantic ocean and the Lagos lagoon. The city has been experiencing annual flooding , but that of this year (2017) is epic. As the city grows in leaps and bounds, currently with a population of 18m +, if the flooding is not PREVENTED , Lagos State will put its residents in danger every time it rains and jeopardize the properties of various communities. All available record and prediction indicate that the trend will continue. This is due to the perilous combination of climate change, changes in demography [urban migration] and indiscriminate development along the coastal lines. The most culpable reason is indiscriminate development, lagoon reclamation and inadequate infrastructure to service and protect already developed areas.
Only Lagos state Government and Governor Akinwummi Ambode can prevent this city of Atlantis splendor from being destroyed by floods .

Our appeal to HE , the Lagos state governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode are as stated below:

1. To stop all ongoing and planned sand filling and reclamation in the Lagos Lagoon , until an independent EIA is conducted in collaboration with the affected communities.

2. To implement the existing Lagos state environmental and Urban development laws including restoration of major drainages and water channels, particularly in the Lekki, Ajah , Victoria Island, Oworonsoki and many other parts of the City

You cannot continue to fold your hands and watch until a disaster happens. We must all rise up and become the voice for change and prevent the disaster that looms every time there is heavy rain. As residents and business owners in Lagos, we pay taxes, land charges and all manners of levies to government and therefore the Government is under obligation to protect lives and properties of its citizens . You have received this petition as a concerned citizen and you are duty bound to sign. The city belong to all of us and we have the responsibility to protect our environment!
