Stop Egypt from weaponising travel bans
The Egyptian government is weaponising travel bans to silence human rights defenders and dissidents. From NGO workers, journalists and lawyers to members of political parties - those affected by them become prisoners in their own country. Some are being informed of their travel restrictions only at the airport, and in many cases are never provided an explanation as to why they aren't allowed to leave the country.
Described by some as an "open-ended nightmare," these arbitrary bans bluntly contradict Articles 54 and 62 of the Egyptian constitution, which upholds freedom of movement unless correct judicial proceedings have taken place and been fully explained.
In the numerous cases documented by Human Rights Watch, none of the procedures laid out in the constitution have taken place. The bans exist in a legal vacuum, and there is currently no clear way to challenge them.
All the while, the bans continue to destroy lives: tearing apart families and curtailing employment. They are a blatant act of undemocratic governance.
FairPlanet is calling on governments the world over to recognise the human rights abuses being committed by the Egyptian government.
By signing and sharing this petition you will be raising awareness of this issue and placing pressure on the Egyptian government to uphold its constitution and commitment to protecting human rights.
