Stop Edinburgh council making dangerous road changes, cycle lanes & parking cuts permanent

Under the cover of COVID, Edinburgh Council spent over £5m experimenting with our communities' roads, our safety, and our business access by forcing through road closures, barrier cycle lanes, in-road bus stops and removing parking.
They did this with inadequate safety assessments, no thought for disabled and elderly people, and ignoring over 10,000 objections. They promised these “Spaces for People” were temporary, but now plan to make them permanent.
Legal opinion suggests this is unlawful.
IMPACTS ACROSS EDINBURGH
Nearly 100 schemes, with dozens of road closures and 39km of poorly thought-out cycle lanes were implemented in areas including Corstorphine, Silverknowes, Ferry Road, Leith, Stockbridge, Duddingston, Portobello, Newington, Causewayside, Fairmilehead, Braids, Morningside, Bruntsfield, Tollcross, Lanark Road, Longstone & Gorgie, with many more planned.
These include severe reductions in access and parking, with bus stops and small parking spaces squeezed between cycle lanes and the road, creating dangers for all.
CITY-WIDE HARM AND PRESSURE ON NHS
When Edinburgh comes out of lockdown, many will not recognise their city. Schemes are:
- blocking access for residents, visitors and carers, in particular those with disabilities
- increasing congestion
- delaying buses, ambulances and other emergency vehicles
- causing accidents for pedestrians and cyclists
- eroding a conservation area
- damaging businesses already under severe pressure due to the pandemic
- diverting attention from gritting and pothole repairs, pressuring the NHS with dozens of accidents
These are facts. But claims that these schemes are reducing Covid transmission are groundless. In some cases, they even cause crowding.
The council’s bullying approach is harming the entire credibility of active travel.
COUNCIL CONSULTATIONS CAN NO LONGER BE TRUSTED
Edinburgh Council plans to use a fast-tracked “consultation” this spring, to make these schemes permanent.
We have no confidence in this approach. In previous “consultations” like this, the council ignored up to 90% opposition, then implemented their plans regardless.
LEGISLATION IS BEING MANIPULATED
The council is also manipulating road-traffic legislation to replace robust public consultations with these fast-tracked "consultations", which often exclude sections of the community.
We reject this and call on the council to honour their commitment that Spaces for People schemes were temporary. Any scheme considered for permanency should go through a standard Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).
This well-established process ensures that all residents and businesses impacted by each scheme have a say, and that safety and equality of access receive proper scrutiny.
LOCAL DEMOCRATIC PROCESS MUST BE RESTORED
Long-term changes must reflect post-pandemic travel patterns, while prioritising the economic recovery of our city.
The council’s 10-year City Mobility Plan, “to move from a traffic dominated city centre to a people friendly one” needs to use normal legislation, proceed gradually and win the informed consent of communities in a democratic way. Without this, it will fail.
