Dear Congresswoman Matsui,
We are members of the Five Lucky Legos robotics team at Brookfield School in Sacramento. As part of our FLL project this year, we are studying water quality and have decided to focus our project on the impact of prescription medication in municipal water supplies.
Research from the latest EPA study shows there are over 56 types of medication in our water from people flushing unwanted pills in their toilets. Over 100 are found in our rivers, streams, and ponds. The most common type of pills found include anti-depressants, blood pressure medication and estrogen pills. In large concentrations these pills can impact people’s health. In fact, scientists have found male fish transformed into female fish from large concentrations of estrogen pills in the water supply. Reference: “Scientists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Geological Survey studied fish in 19 national wildlife refuges in the U.S. Northeast, including Missisquoi. Their conclusion: An astonishing 60 to 100 percent of all the male smallmouth bass they examined had female egg cells growing in their testes.”
During our tours at two water treatment plants, the engineers told us there is currently no filtering of medication because it is too refined. We know for a fact there is no law or requirement for doctors or pharmacists to put a label on the pill bottle warning people against disposing unused pills into our water cycle. We urge you to sponsor legislation to require warning labels against flushing unused medication. We also respectfully request that the legislation includes a requirement for the dispensing pharmacy to take back unwanted medication.
