The proposed development on Exeter College's main campus would destroy a valuable green space and put at risk magnificent/historic trees in what is a designated conservation area. The scale and dominance of the proposed 5-storey structures would also block out light and impact on the privacy of the immediate local residences. The visual change would be dramatic for everyone in Exeter, including for visitors who arrive via train to our beautiful city.
The College's proposal for young student housing is for two 5 storey blocks on the edge of St. David's Hill and Howell Road - right opposite the Imperial Inn grounds. This development is considered inappropriate for the area and has been planned with no consultation. Not only is there concern about 'boarding school' arrangements for 16+ year olds, but there is worry about the youngsters care when not attending classes e.g. in the evenings.
St David's is the gateway for many to the City. The view from The Imperial Estate and St Davids train station would be lost and the blocks would be overpowering coming up St David's Hill.
There is lots of under-occupied student accommodation in the area, including blocks in St David's, and we believe alternative avenues have not yet been fully explored. Please help. Please sign the petition on behalf of all those working to make St David's a place where people enjoy living and working.
