STOP DEPORTING ASYLUM APPLICANTS TO VENEZUELA

There are currently thousands of unsuccessful Venezuelan asylum applicants in the United States facing removal to Venezuela, a country they fled because they feared for their lives in the first place. The only difference with deportees from Venezuela is that the Venezuelan government systematically classifies them as some sort of “Imperialist Traitors”, therefore exposing them to a life of harassment and mistreatment, including incarceration and even death. To top things off, The Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), routinely informs the Venezuelan consulates of the alien’s asylum application which further worsens the situation of said alien upon his/her arrival to Venezuela. Hugo Chavez has publicly labeled of “Traitors” all those persons who have applied for asylum in the United States. Then, how can this government deport citizens to a country where they will be certainly persecuted? Even if they did not meet their burden of proof initially, a deportation will become a ground for persecution in itself. Several congressmen in South Florida are aware of this big problem, and have promised to do something about it, but in the meantime, ICE continues to disclose asylum applications to the Venezuelan citizens, and sending Venezuelan citizens in harm’s way. It is time for the U.S. to take action in this matter and stop deportations of Venezuelan citizens to Venezuela for the time being.
