Daylight Saving Time has been used in the U.S. and in many European countries since World War I mainly in an effort to conserve fuel needed to produce electric power and provide more sunlight to farmers. This legislation has been played with quite a few times and in many European countries it has been done away with.

Times have since changed significantly and now we are living in a technology age where DST does not matter anymore. Whatever benefit that people thought they could get in old times have more or less become irrelevant.

However, negative impact of DST continues to affect people and has become more relevant since the the positive impact is totally debatable. Many scientists have shown studies that clearly highlight the negative impact of DST on humans and how it disrupts the sleeping cycle.

Dr. Joseph Takahashi, Chair of Neuroscience at UT Southwestern, is one of the world's leading experts on biological clocks. His lab discovered the first circadian gene in mammals. On the first Sunday in November, we will turn our clocks back an hour to end daylight saving time. While the "fall back" technically equates to a potential extra hour of sleep, the reset isn't so easy for our internal clocks – also known as our circadian rhythm. In fact, this twice-a-year desynchronization of our body clocks has been linked to increased health risks such as depression, obesity, heart attack, cancer, and even car accidents.

Sleeplessness is associated with stress and we have all witnessed how COVID-19 related stress has lead to sleeplessness - on top of that we have to adjust our body clocks twice a year which adds to the already stressed minds - which in turn leads to high blood pressure, depression, mental and psychological issues. One study showed that hospitals reported addressing 11% more depressive symptoms right after the fall time change. The time change in the spring did not result in a similar result, supporting the notion that sunlight does our minds and bodies good.

Federal government and our New Jersey State government need to seriously think about either abolishing DST or maintaining DST throughout the year. We are now living in a different world altogether and it is high time that we change our policies to embrace the changing times.
