How SAFE is your aircraft?

Trudie Dadd
Crewkerne, ENG, United Kingdom

Nov 25, 2019 —

Flight BA2676 on 19th October 2019 was a routine flight from London Gatwick to Paphos, Cyprus.
No doubt there would have been lots of families onboard being the beginning of the school half-term holidays in the UK, but none of them knew just how close they came to disaster.
Fumes entered the cockpit affecting the pilots who had to use their emergency oxygen masks to ensure they didn’t become unconscious.
Fortunately, the aircraft landed safely and it seems that it was only the cockpit affected by the contaminated air on this occasion.
The air onboard aircraft (except for the Boeing 787) is ‘bled off’ from the engines and sometimes oil enters the air conditioning system which provides the breathing air onboard.
A couple of excerpts from the report:
‘About 30 seconds later the first officer felt his arms and legs were tingling and he had the impression he was about to faint. He donned his oxygen mask and made sure oxygen was set to 100%. ‘

‘After a couple of seconds the captain finally reacted stating very slowly he didn't feel good, too, and donned his oxygen mask. Both pilots verified the captain's oxygen was set to 100%. During that time several calls by ATC to descend to 4000 feet went unnoticed.’

This was not an isolated incident. The same aircraft had a similar incident on 2nd October 2019 as BA2673 en-route from Paphos to Gatwick. It diverted to Athens:

The airline reported that it was a ‘minor technical issue’.
On the 5th October the same aircraft (G-GATL) was flying from Toulouse to Gatwick as Flight Number BA2684 and diverted to Bilbao in Spain.
No doubt with another ‘minor technical issue’.
On the same day another aircraft, G-MIDX flying from Bari to Gatwick diverted to Basel/Mulhouse airport due to yet another Fume Event onboard.
Over the years there have been many such incidents. Some of them are listed here:

This is the pilot report from another fume event onboard a Germanwings flight in 2010:

This ‘minor technical issue’ could result in the loss of an aircraft and a total loss of life if pilots become totally incapacitated. It is a very serious issue and one which the Aviation Industry needs to STOP right now.

A law needs passing urgently for the mandatory fitting of sensors/monitoring equipment and carbon monoxide detectors onboard all aircraft.
The technology is available and this will warn pilots and crew when contamination is present.
The Aviation Industry needs to come together as a matter of urgency to find a suitable and efficient solution to stop contaminated air from entering bleed-aircraft.
There is also an urgent need to acknowledge the damage caused to human health, not only in the short-term (as acknowledged already), but the long-term health effects which thousands of people are living with after being exposed to the highly toxic contaminated air in aircraft cockpits and cabins.

Please sign this petition and share it with your friends and family. It is only by the public becoming aware of this danger that laws will be implemented to make the necessary changes - and to make flying safe for everyone.
