Why this petition matters

Started by Kyle Nalda

"As you move along the color spectrum, the darker you are, the less important, viable, beautiful, or all of those things that society has imposed upon based on that notion of supremacy"

Whereas racist targets individuals based on their race, colorism targets individuals based on their hue or tone of their skin. Persons of the same race can have varied skin tones, whole people of the different races can have the same skin tones.

This indicates that individuals of the same race or ethnicity are not immune to bias. Colorism is not a choice, though. It is influenced by centuries of racism and brutality that compelled people to identify as white in order to survive. People of all races and ethnicities are affected by colorism, a persuasive result of racism that upholds a white supremacy even today.

People with colorist attitudes tend to view those with lighter skin tones as intelligent, attractive, prestigious and capable than those with darker skin tones, whether conciously or unconciously.

It's critical that each of us recognize our value and realize that we are more than just a particular shade of brown. We need to avoid allowing other people to impose in us the mistaken concept that being light is a requirement of value.

The entire black community has to be called to reject colorism of their own. We need to stop saying to people with lighter complexion are pretteir and that people with darker skin is less valuable.
