Response from the Competition Bureau

Rio Theatre

Feb 13, 2020 —

Thank you for all your support! Below is the response from the Competition Bureau. Its looks like we have a strong case against Cineplex for "anti-competitive conduct."

Thank you for the information you provided to the Competition Bureau (“Bureau”) regarding independent theatres in Canada.

The role of the Bureau, as an independent law enforcement agency, is to ensure that Canadian businesses and consumers prosper in a competitive and innovative marketplace. In carrying out our mandate, information brought to our attention by consumers, businesses and other market participants is very important, as it contributes to the identification and analysis of potentially anti-competitive practices in the marketplace.

The Bureau takes all allegations of anti-competitive conduct seriously, and evaluates them under the statutory requirements of the Competition Act (the “Act”). The Bureau will not hesitate to take action under the Act where there is evidence that prices, or any other dimension of competition within a market, have been negatively affected by anti-competitive conduct with the result that competition has been substantially lessened or prevented.

We trust that this information is of assistance to you. Should you have new information, we encourage you to provide it to the Bureau.

We appreciate you taking the time to bring this to our attention.

Sincerely,

Monopolistic Practices Directorate
Mergers and Monopolistic Practices Branch
Competition Bureau
