The Columbus V. Indigenous People’s day debate has been a controversial topic of interest in the last few years, and historically, has always been on the minds of the people of the United States. Whether or not to celebrate a man who never even stepped foot on the grounds of modern-day USA is a hot topic turned into a political frenzy. What has become clear is that people who defend Columbus Day are very unlikely to accept a replacement celebration of indigenous people. Although the switch seems like common sense once you know the facts (Rape, murder, knowingly spreading deadly diseases), replacing Columbus Day with indigenous people’s day does not seem like a likely option. Celebrating Columbus at a University named after a man who fought for religious freedom and tolerance is disgraceful. To uphold the integrity and morals that our school stands for, we must stop celebrating Columbus day. People in power who want to continue the celebration of Columbus Day have historically threatened to stop funding organizations and schools (including RWU) that they have previously supported, which would ultimately result in financial ruin. To mitigate the defensive response of Columbus supporters, I ask that you sign this petition that simple calls for the eradication of Columbus Day, without a certain replacement holiday or celebration. This is the first step to the proper celebration of the indigenous cultures that were almost entirely wiped out hundreds of years ago by a man who is unrightfully celebrated in our country and at our school.
